"I had played everywhere in public in Israel. Making a career is just not as simple as that." So they go and strive for that, but they find that it's very disappointing. "Lots of young string players today watch clips on YouTube and say, 'I want to be like that famous musician'. He arranged a scholarship through the Israel Cultural Foundation, and at the age of 14, Zukerman moved to New York to study with Ivan Galamian, one of the most successful violin pedagogues of the 20th century whose pedagogical method was based on the French and Russian schools in which he himself was trained. On a visit to Israel in 1962, the cellist Pablo Casals and violinist Isaac Stern heard the boy play and immediately recognised a special talent. Isaac and Vera Stern created the America-Israel Cultural Foundation and we played for all the dignitaries, Casals and the Budapest Quartet and Maureen Forrester and a whole bunch of people that always came to Israel, usually during the summer." All these extraordinary people came after the war Oedoen Partos and Ben-Haim were there. "From day one, I started to play little duets with my father, and then chamber music with Ilona Feher at the Tel Aviv Academy. They let me go when I was 13 and that wasn't easy for survivors, but my father said to my mother as the plane was taking off, 'In six months, Miriam, we'll be on a boat to New York.' And they did, they sold everything and moved." "He really gave his life to me and so did my mom. "I knew I had – inside – something extremely powerful." "Then a friend said to my father: 'Forget the clarinet, give him the violin.'" So he started on a half-sized violin. But first he taught little Pinchas the recorder and at six, the clarinet. His father Yehuda, a master klezmer musician and a professional violinist, who'd played with the Warsaw Philharmonic before the war, discovered his baby son could be soothed by the sound of his violin. His parents survived Auschwitz and underwent a long and dangerous journey to move to Israel from Poland in 1947, where he was born the following year. Zukerman's career trajectory was far from easy, though his talent brought him luck along the way.
